4th of July highlights include small town atmosphere, parades, salmon bbqs, car shows, live music, and fireworks!
Fourth of July on San Juan Island
( home of Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor ) starts off with a family run of 5000m or 3.1 miles. Run proceeds go to help pay for the Friday Harbor fireworks display. Adults approximately $10. Extra T-shirts $10. Check with the San Juan Island fitness center for up to date details. 360-378-4449.
The fourth of July parade passes through downtown Friday Harbor around 10 a.m. Immediately following the parade is the Pig War Picnic put on by the Kiwanis at the San Juan Island historical Museum. The museum is located three blocks from downtown Friday Harbor just off of Spring Street. Expect live music and good food. The Friday Harbor fire station also serves lunch from noon until 2 p.m. later in the day from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. the fire station plays host for a barbecue dinner. The Port of Friday Harbor usually has live music starting in the late afternoon up until the fireworks begin at around 10 p.m.
Several waterfront restaurants overlooking Friday Harbor have great vantage points for viewing the fireworks display. Another great option is to walk out on the docks of the Port of Friday Harbor.
On the other end of San Juan Island is Roche Harbor Marina and resort. They usually schedule a "Fun Run", dinghy races, logrolling, live music, and their very own fireworks display.
Fourth of July on Orcas Island starts out with a pancake breakfast at the firehall in Eastsound Village. Enjoy pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice, coffee, and milk from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Adults $7, kids 12 and under are $5. Around 12:30 p.m. the fourth of July parade passes through the heart of Eastsound Village.
After the parade stop by the American Legion for a salmon barbecue lunch or dinner sponsored by the Lions Club. Adults $17, $8 for children. The fireworks display is presented over Eastsound at 10 p.m. The fireworks display over Eastsound can be viewed from Deer Harbour as well as many hillside bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals.
Fourth of July on Lopez Island starts out with a 10 km walk and run. The race usually starts at around 830 in the morning and benefits Lopez community organizations. The Fourth of July parade starts at Woodman Hall at 11 a.m. and follows Fisherman Bay Road to Lopez Road, into Lopez Village past the business center and ends at Islanders bank. The Chamber of Commerce puts on a salmon barbecue from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with all profits going towards the fireworks display. Barbecued salmon, garlic bread, salads, watermelon, and coffee. Adults are $18, children are $10. Check with the Chamber of Commerce for up to date prices and times. Fireworks start at around 10:30 p.m. over Fisherman Bay. There is a voluntary cleanup effort the next morning to clean up the debris from the fireworks display.
